Letter to Dean Mary Ann Jones, WSU re: Frank N. Darras’ Speech

Dear Dean Maryann Jones,

I wanted to send you a note about the graduation ceremony last Saturday at The Grove. My family was in attendance as my son, Robert was a graduate from in the class of 2009.

I wanted to tell you that the speakers were great! Especially Mr. Frank N. Darras. He epitomized everything I hope my son will become in his practice. He moved me to tears several times in his speech. Listening to him, he restored my faith in humanity and his determination to fight the good fight, for right, no matter the obstacles was amazing.

I really liked the way he was honest about where he came from. He told the graduates that it doesn’t matter if they have a dream in their heart, no matter what not only can it be achieved but also it is truly they themselves that make all the difference in its realization.
He emphasized that determination, passion, compassion, integrity and a belief in themselves and their cause are all the basic tools required. The rest will come and the job will get done.

I only wish that his words could have been written in the program so they could be referred to from time to time when the going gets tough. I found his words not only inspirational to Lawyers I believe anyone who hears them would benefit from them.

As I write this, I wonder if you would consider asking Mr. Darras if it would be possible for you to have copies made of his speech, written or video (his delivery was also very impressive) and allow you to make it available to all the graduates. I know my family would like to have a copy to lift us up from time to time, and I am sure we are not the only ones.

I commend you Dean Maryann Jones, for putting together the most inspirational graduation ceremony I have ever attended. I wish you luck and happiness, as you move on with your life in another state; Western State University of College of Law will sorely miss your leadership.

Dear Mr. Darras,
I was initially told that due to deadlines passing before you got my case; that little could be done to help me.

I wish I could thank you in person but for now, I want you to know how much it meant to me that you did all you could do for me. I am not sure anyone really realized all I have been through, especially in the past 20 years, but it has been a series of long struggles that I kept surviving until I got really sick and in 1999, when I almost died.

This disease is makes it impossible to simply process thoughts, form words and it can make you forget how to do simple things, like write or cash a check, remember your birth date or phone number, multiply, divide and even the easiest of daily activities. Fibromyalgia has made my life nearly impossible.

Whether you knew it or not, it was like a miracle to have someone help me with this claim, especially without my having to travel, keep doing research, write or try to talk on the phone and process questions. I could not have done this without you.

Finding out that this case was settled made me completely speechless. Now I can get some relief from my struggles after such a long difficult time.
